The Election, Democracy, and Art

Hi, all,

I know we've been processing a lot lately.  I finally logged in after many months and actually deleted our long-slumbering X account (left over from the days when Twitter was a happy place).

I, like so many of you, am filled with rage and despair right now.  But we are re-grouping.  Give yourselves time to grieve.  But also, if you feel it, give yourselves time to have joy.  We need joy so desperately, especially now, because the future is going to be very, very difficult.  Not just for us but for the whole world.

The US has abdicated its role as the international protector of democracy, a position we have held since 1945.  We've been taken over by plutocrats and religious bigots who understand nothing of the sacrifice of their forebears.

The picture is from a trip I took to Normandy in January, 2020.  It is hallowed ground.  The incoming administration has no business being near it, as they would defile it with their presence.

We will never be able to restore in the eyes of the world what America was.  We might be able to get back on track in some time - or maybe not.  Not all stories have happy endings.

But we live in a country that may have killed democracy with a preventable, self-inflicted wound, when we were on the cusp of greatness.
